We provide community learning opportunities for all ages and abilities that stimulate community empowerment through self-exploration, critical thinking and reflection. This stimulates potential personal growth and psychological resilience toward greater well-being.
We work with communities to understand their well-being needs by facilitating opportunities to ask meaningful questions about their individual and collective circumstances.
Our approach is based on the social pedagogy of Pablo Freire and aims to develop situational awareness through reflection and appraisal of issues, situations and circumstances.
Freire said “One cannot expect positive results from an educational or political action program which fails to respect the particular view of the world held by the people. Such a program constitutes cultural invasion, good intentions not withstanding” (Freire, 1972).
Our Transformational Education involves four main themes for community engagement in the context of wellbeing:
1.Identifying the generative theme
2.Developing codes
3.Engaging in dialogue
4.Taking and reflecting on actions
We also work with the community to identify and develop community leaders (connectors) and build individual and collective capacity for action as part of a holistic, integrated learning process. Leadership in this context is not about authority and control, it is about effective liaison, connection and communication between community leaders (connectors) and the community.
